First steps in Last Epoch Season 5: pick a class, pick a mastery, level through the campaign, and know what to skip and what not to.
Last Epoch Beginner Guide for Season 5 (2026)
Start in the base class whose fantasy sounds fun, treat the mastery as a mid-game unlock instead of a launch decision, and run the campaign straight through — the only thing the main path does not hand you is the three dungeon key caches, and those are new this season. That is the beginner plan for Season 5: Rage of the Frostborn, live on Steam since October 1, 2026 at 11 AM CDT, running Hotfix 1.5.1.1 as of 2026-10-03. This guide is PC/Steam only; the console version is announced but not released and has no date.
Is starting over in Season 5 worth it?
It depends on which of you you are. A player who never touched Last Epoch has no sunk cost and the densest season content the game has shipped. A player who quit in Season 4 is in a different position: your character was moved to Legacy when Season 5 started, and as of Patch 1.5.1 Legacy characters can already challenge Pinnacle Morditas, so last season's gear is not dead weight. What you lose by staying in Legacy is Seasonal Online content, which the season race explicitly requires.
Patch 1.5.1 opened Pinnacle Morditas to Legacy and Offline characters, and Hotfix 1.5.1.1 fixed Legacy stash menus missing on characters from a season that just ended. The mode breakdown covers what each option locks out.
The 5 base classes and the 15 masteries
The official class page states it plainly: "Pick between 5 Base Classes and 15 Mastery Classes" — Acolyte, Mage, Primalist, Sentinel, Rogue. The Steam store description leads with the same number, "Ascend into one of 15 mastery classes." Each base class hangs three masteries off its passive tree, so your first choice is one of five, not fifteen.
| Base class | The three masteries | The official pitch |
|---|---|---|
| Sentinel | Forge Guard, Void Knight, Paladin | "Strong in honor and fearsome in combat" |
| Rogue | Bladedancer, Marksman, Falconer | "Unrivaled in bow and blade" |
| Primalist | Shaman, Beastmaster, Druid | "A warrior from the north... seeks communion" |
| Mage | Runemaster, Spellblade, Sorcerer | "An Elder... wields the power of the arcane" |
| Acolyte | Lich, Necromancer, Warlock | "A rebellious scion who sought out forbidden magic" |
The class blurbs are from lastepoch.com/classes; the three-per-class split is community consensus (Polygon and the Fandom wiki agree), and the 1.5 patch notes independently name ten of the fifteen. Full breakdowns live in Last Epoch's 15 Mastery Classes Explained.
Pick your first character by the feel you want
No official tier ranking exists for Season 5 — any "best class" list you find is a third-party opinion with a date attached. Choose on two axes instead:
- Do you want to stand and trade blows? Sentinel or Primalist. Both keep you in the front line, and the Sentinel's Paladin branch gets one of this season's headline skills.
- Do you want to reposition every fight? Rogue. Bladedancer moves you and your Shadows together.
- Do you want to stop the cast bar? Mage, or Sentinel's Void Knight. Planar damage is how most speedruns describe their damage, but that is community framing, not a dev statement.
- Do you want minions, totems, and patience? Primalist's Shaman or Acolyte's Lich and Necromancer. These start slower and reward a full group of corpses.
Weigh all 15 masteries before you commit — or skip the blank slate and start from Best Starter Builds for Season 5.
Season 5's three new skills: restart or not?
All three are locked behind passive-tree investment, which is why you should not restart for them on day one. The unlock costs, from the 1.5 patch notes:
| Skill | Class | Passive points required |
|---|---|---|
| Dreamslash | Rogue / Bladedancer | 10 |
| Radiant Lance | Sentinel / Paladin | 15 |
| Summon Tide Elemental | Primalist / Shaman | 30 |
Two of the three are reachable early in a normal playthrough; the Shaman's 30-point gate is the expensive one, so budget it or pick another class for your first character. All three have conversion nodes that change their damage type, which matters if you chase the season's new gear — Season 5's Three New Skills, Explained covers what each actually does in combat.
Campaign order, and what to leave for later
- Main story first. It is the only route to the Monolith content, and where the level curve is tuned to land.
- Say yes to the Blood Crystal. It "can spawn in the Campaign as early as Chapter 2," and in Echoes it appears as an interactable Blood Crystal — it never triggers without you touching it. Kills build Bloodrage Charges at 20 / 50 / 90 / 140 / 200 kills, each tier handing you one of 28 buffs. The Rage of Morditas farm guide covers the reward panel.
- Detour for the three dungeon key caches. They sit in out-of-the-way locations and the main path will not take you there.
- Defer the grinder. Faction renown, Weaver Tree resets and arena chasing are endgame systems you can grind later; nothing in the campaign is blocked on them. Item Factions in Season 5 explains the choice once you get there.
One reward change to know about: killing Majasa and The Observer no longer awards +1 to all attributes, and killing The Observer now gives +1 passive point.
Can you skip the campaign?
Partly — via one route that is new in Season 5. The patch notes are explicit: "Added three new one shot caches with dungeon keys in out of the way locations. Once found, these offer a single chance to use each dungeon to bypass part of the campaign on your first character of a season or a solo character."
Each dungeon gets one bypass use, scoped to your first seasonal character or a solo character, and it skips part of the campaign, not the story. We found no official statement about skipping the campaign wholesale — treat broader "skip the story" claims in community guides as unverified against developer sources.

Re-entering an Echo you already cleared now cuts XP and Favor hard. The official framing was blunt: the nerf exists so the optimal play is not "farm Rune Prison Complex forever."
Online, Offline, or Legacy for a new account
- Online (seasonal) — the only mode eligible for Seasonal Online content, and required for the First Blood race. The default recommendation for a new account.
- True Offline — reached from the landing page after launching normally as of 1.5; older guides telling you to set a Steam launch option are now wrong. Since 1.5.1, Offline characters can challenge Pinnacle Morditas too.
- Legacy — where your Season 4 character lives now. It stays intact, but is out of scope for seasonal Online content.
Your first week, as a checklist
- Finish the campaign, touching every Blood Crystal you see.
- Clear one full Rage of Morditas encounter — pushing past 200 kills fills your charge bar, and charges are what fund the Bloody and Frozen Ritual choice.
- Pick a faction and start its renown passively.
- Open the Monolith of Fate and learn what a Timeline and an Echo are (endgame starter guide).
- Push Corruption toward 400 — the official requirement for Demigod's Ascendance, the Pinnacle version of Morditas (how Corruption actually raises).
- The three Ultra-rare Season 5 uniques — Gift of the Eidolon, Eternal Font, Death Dance — now drop only in level 80+ zones as of Hotfix 1.5.1.1.
- Log in during the first two weeks after October 1 for the Blood Seeker title. Competing for the ten Enraged Legend Supporter Packs requires Seasonal Online characters played solo.
FAQ
What is the best class for a beginner? There is no official ranking. Pick the base class whose fantasy you like, and decide the mastery once respecping is cheap.
Should I start a Season 5 character if I already played Season 4? Depends on the goal: seasonal content and the race require Online, while your Season 4 character is safe in Legacy and can already attempt Pinnacle Morditas as of Patch 1.5.1.
Can I jump straight into the Monolith and skip the story? Not on official evidence. The only skip mechanism the 1.5 notes describe is the single-use dungeon bypass from the three key caches, and it covers part of the campaign, not all of it.
Do I need to finish the campaign before farming? No, but it is where you unlock the Monolith and most of your first build's skill points.
