The three S5 starter routes — Dreamslash Bladedancer, Tide Elemental Shaman, Radiant Lance Paladin — and when not to build around a new skill.
Last Epoch Season 5 Starter Builds: Pick the Route Before the Skill
Three routes are worth starting a Season 5 character on: Dreamslash Bladedancer if you refuse to study gear, Summon Tide Elemental Shaman if you want a build that holds up without a second minion system, and Radiant Lance Paladin if you are willing to learn block chance. The choice that shapes your first week is not between them, though, because all three Season 5 skills sit behind mastery trees a level-one character cannot reach. PC/Steam, Patch 1.5.1.1, live October 3, 2026.

The three routes at a glance
| Route | Fits a player who | Official gate | What drives its damage | First milestone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dreamslash Bladedancer | Wants the least gear research in the game | 10 Bladedancer passive points | Dexterity, plus how many Shadows you feed the skill | Kill The Observer in campaign, then trigger a Blood Crystal |
| Summon Tide Elemental Shaman | Has been burned by summon rebalances before | 30 Shaman passive points, the longest of the three | Attunement for health and damage, character level for survivability | Clear content with the elemental as your only minion |
| Radiant Lance Paladin | Likes a strong start and reads tooltips twice | 15 Paladin passive points | Uncapped block chance, until Cloudless Sky swaps it for mana | Get real block chance onto gear before judging the skill |

Why "should I restart for the new skill?" is already answered
Eleventh Hour Games did not add three free-standing abilities. They added each class's final mastery skill, which is how the official post describes both Dreamslash and "Shaman's much anticipated final mastery ability". A mastery skill sits behind a mastery choice, which sits behind passive tree points: 10 for Bladedancer, 15 for Paladin, 30 for Shaman.
The season also does not start at a skill point. It starts in campaign, then the Monolith of Fate: the Blood Crystal is an interactable inside an Echo, Morditas is tracked through the Nexus after you complete a Rage of Morditas encounter, and Pinnacle Morditas sits behind 400 Corruption. A character that spent the season chasing an unreachable skill arrives at week two with none of it. Read the Season 5 overview for the patch shape, or the beginner guide if you have never played.
Route 1: Dreamslash Bladedancer, the gear-independent option
Dreamslash dashes you forward through everything on the path, then finishes with a quick slash, and your Shadows do the same, dashing past targets and hitting what they pass. Added damage lands at 150% effectiveness, each point of Dexterity adds 4% damage, it costs 3 mana, and it has no cooldown. The team wanted Bladedancer to have "a low-cost, spammable attack with movement", which is why it suits players who refuse to become gear analysts: the scaling reads off Dexterity and off Shadows you already have, and no item is named in its official text, so you can keep using whatever drops.
Synchronized Strike is now Bladedancer-only and moved from a 10-point unlock to 35, so any Bladedancer advice written before October 1 is partly out of date.
Route 2: Summon Tide Elemental Shaman, the one that stands alone
The 30-point gate makes this the slowest route to reach, and that is the argument for it. The official post is specific: the Tide Elemental is "a powerful, stand-alone minion that can fight with or without other minions" that "can stand as a focal point of a build". If your last character died every time a patch touched summons, this is the answer written into the skill.
You get one permanent elemental casting ice spells, starting at 400 health with +16 health and +4% damage per Attunement point plus +16 health per character level. Geyser is the one spell on a 4-second cooldown, cast immediately on summon, and your spell damage applies to its projectiles at 200% and to Geyser at 400%. Tidal Totem converts it into a totem, trading mobility for totem modifiers, and Wellspring gives allies within 18 meters extra cold spell damage and cast speed.
No agreed damage figure exists for the Tide Elemental at Patch 1.5.1.1 and this page will not invent one. Run one Echo with it as your only summon and see whether it survives contact.
Route 3: Radiant Lance Paladin, strongest start, steepest tax
Radiant Lance needs a shield, channels holy light into it, and fires a beam forward. It gains damage from block chance like Shield Bash does: every 1% of uncapped block chance adds 1% damage, added damage sits at 500% effectiveness, each Attunement point adds 4%, and it costs 24 mana with no cooldown. Patch 1.5 also moved every block-scaling effect onto uncapped block chance, so the scaling continues past 100%.
That is the tax. A Rogue route can be judged on your own; a block-scaling Paladin cannot be judged until your gear has real block chance. Cloudless Sky is the release valve, dropping the shield requirement and swapping block scaling for mana scaling, which is the two-handed version. Effusive Oath, one of the Season 5 Uniques, converts Radiant Lance into physical damage; the Uniques breakdown covers what that does to a route you have not built yet.
It is the deepest-covered route. Maxroll's sitemap (pulled October 4) lists a Paladin guide, a leveling guide and a Void Knight variant, all updated September 27 to October 3, with no equivalent Dreamslash or Tide Elemental guide in it. Pick the Paladin for pre-planning, not because it is strongest.
Where the new skills stop being the answer
Two node descriptions decide this, both from the same official post. Recurring Dreams "allows you to guarantee shadows get resummoned on every single use, but not for long, as it will rapidly consume mana" — the node that makes Dreamslash self-sustaining is the one that drains the resource the skill is cheap because you have. Narcolepsy "grants Dream stacks, which causes Dreamslash to deal significantly more damage but target random enemies," and Dreamwalker and Dreamshift push further that way. Choose the Rogue route for control, and those are the nodes where you trade it away.
Two more reasons. Tide Elemental's gate lands last on any fresh character, and the new-skill-plus-new-Unique fantasy is not available in week one: as of Hotfix 1.5.1.1, Gift of the Eidolon, Eternal Font and Death Dance only drop in level 80+ zones. What each skill does in a real fight is in the Season 5 new skills reference.
Your first week, in order
- Push campaign first, choose your mastery when it unlocks, keep going. Blood Crystals can appear from chapter 2 onward, though players reported on the official forum that campaign spawns often land in stretches with no monsters nearby, making the Monolith version the reliable one.
- Get into the Monolith of Fate before tuning anything. Season 5 cut the XP and Favor from re-running a cleared Echo specifically to stop one favorite Echo being the optimal leveler. The Monolith starter guide has the route.
- Choose a faction. Both were rebuilt in 1.5, making this a season-start decision; see Season 5 faction changes.
- Spend Weaver Tree points as they unlock using the Weaver Tree guide, because they gate Echo content, not your damage.
- Then chase the new skill. The 15 mastery classes explained covers which mastery each one lives in.
First Blood runs two weeks from October 1, and everyone who logs into Season 5 in that window gets the Blood Seeker title. Rules track kills in real time with no video submission. A reason to move fast, not a reason to skip campaign.
What this page will not give you
No point-by-point skill trees, no passive orders, no DPS numbers, no clear times. Those belong to planners, and the honest versions are Maxroll and Last Epoch Tools. This page only picks the route and sequences week one. Patch 1.5 shipped October 1 with two patches on top by October 3, so older damage figures are already suspect.
FAQ
Should I restart my Season 4 character for the new skills? No. Season 4 characters sit in Legacy, and Patch 1.5.1 officially opened Pinnacle Morditas to Legacy and Offline characters.
Which Season 5 skill can I use first? Dreamslash, at 10 Bladedancer points. Radiant Lance needs 15 Paladin points and Tide Elemental 30 Shaman points, so on one character the Rogue route reaches its new skill soonest.
Do I need a specific item for these skills? No official description names one, beyond a melee weapon for Dreamslash and a shield for Radiant Lance. Gear decides how far the numbers go, not whether you can cast.
Is Tide Elemental worth it if I never played minions? That is the case its design targets, with totem and aura options available without a second summon system.
