Last Epoch Controller Not Working: Steam Input Fixes and Settings
Plug the pad in and open Steam before you blame the game. Last Epoch reads gamepads through Steam's input layer, so a controller Steam sees but the game ignores is almost never a hardware fault — it is a per-game Steam Input setting or an unassigned slot inside the game. Ninety seconds in the Steam client's Controller tab clears most reports.
- The game does support controllers. Steam lists Full controller support, DualShock and DualSense Controller Support, and records controller support as
full. - You are on the Windows build. Steam lists Windows only, so console guides do not apply.
- There is no official setup page. lastepoch.com has no support or FAQ route —
/supportreturns a 404 — so the Steam client's Controller tab is the documented path. Check it first if EHG ever publishes one.

Work out which layer is broken
Input travels hardware → Steam → game, and each layer fails differently.
| Layer | How to test it | Failure looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Steam → Settings → Controller. The pad shows in the top drop-down | Empty list, or it vanishes when you unplug |
| Steam | Click the pad, check the detected layout | Listed, but with another family's layout |
| Game | Launch the game, reassign in the controller options | Steam is clean, the game ignores every button |
A pad missing from the drop-down cannot be fixed in-game; a pad listed but mislabelled is a Steam Input translation problem.
One Steam user with a Thrustmaster T248 wheel and an L8HA shifter still plugged in tracked down why neither their Xbox nor PlayStation pad registered: unplugging the racing hardware alone fixed it. Thread
The Steam Input settings that fix most cases
In Steam, right-click Last Epoch → Properties → Controller. That per-title override is separate from your global settings.
Steam Input for this game: on or off. Try the default first. If the cursor moves but buttons do nothing, flip it and relaunch fully — the change never applies to a running game.
Layout for this game. Pick the official layout for your pad family, not a leftover community preset. Steam Input presents every pad as an XInput controller, so a DualSense correctly shows Xbox glyphs — one user reported a DualSense Edge detected but unusable, blaming Steam Input's XInput fallback.
For the global layer, open Steam → Settings → Controller and toggle Steam Input per family. The forum recipe for PlayStation pads: Steam Input off for Xbox, on for generic and PlayStation. Its author was honest about the limit — the pad worked in game, but he still "can't map any buttons".
It is a March 2024 community post on the official forum, not developer guidance, and was auto-closed a year later. Use it to get input, then reassign in-game. Wrong glyphs on a PlayStation pad are expected on this build.
Reassign the controller inside Last Epoch
Once Steam sees the pad, the fix moves in-game. Open Settings, find the input section (2024 walkthroughs put it under Gameplay, via Change Input Keys), choose Assign Controller, then press the buttons asked for.
The most-repeated fix in the Steam discussions, credited by name: a player whose controller was detected but returned to "no avail" wrote that it was fixed by "clicking 'change input keys' → 'assign controller' in gameplay under settings and then re-assigning my controller when it asks to press a button". Rebuild this binding after a patch, a character switch, or a Cloud restore.
If input arrives intermittently, select Legacy Gamepad then unselect it. A Reddit fix post for unresponsive gamepad controls reported exactly that, adding that "problems which go away on their own" are their own category.
Symptom, what to try, what you should see
| Symptom | Try, in order | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Pad missing from Steam's drop-down | Replug, then power-cycle the pad | Pad name reappears |
| Steam sees it, game ignores it | Assign Controller in Properties, full restart | Skill bar glyphs switch to pad buttons |
| Wrong prompts on a PlayStation pad | Steam Input on for PlayStation, accept glyphs | Input works, glyphs stay Xbox |
| Pad works but cannot be rebound | Official layout, not a saved preset | Bindings accept input again |
| Controller intermittently dead | Select then unselect Legacy Gamepad | Responsiveness returns |
| Every pad fails at once | Unplug wheel, shifter or HOTAS | Pad is picked up immediately |
| Rumble does nothing | Nothing to change — no rumble support reported | Silent hits; expected |
DualShock and DualSense: what players report
- DualSense over USB — the cleanest reported result, in Steam discussions since February 2024.
- DualSense over Bluetooth — reported working well, with Xbox glyphs.
- DualSense Edge — detected, not functional while Steam Input is on.
- Generic and third-party pads — 8Bitdo pads are reported working fine.
Rumble is the one thing nobody has — a consistent player report since 2024, not a documented feature list.
Skill targeting: why it still feels wrong
Detection is solved; aiming is not, and that is a design issue rather than a settings bug.
For Season 2 in April 2025, Eleventh Hour Games replaced controller skill targeting with a new "targeting paradigm" system. Their announcement states the game assigns a behaviour per skill based on its intended use — 'Cast On Self', 'Cast Max Range Forwards', 'Cast on Closest Enemy in Range', with 'Cast On Enemy in Forward Facing Cone' as the default.

Two consequences. First, the behaviour is assigned by the developers, not you: when a Falconer complained that Aerial Assault flung the bird past the target, the useful reply was that "cast max forward" was the wrong call, adding "I was hoping it was a setting players could fiddle with but I don't think it is." Second, individual skills still break — the 1.2.2 notes shipped "Fixed Aerial Assault not using the intended targeting system on a controller."
Projectile and movement skills are where complaints cluster. For the fewest aiming problems, start with something firing at self or forward — read Last Epoch's 15 mastery classes explained, then pick from the Season 5 starter builds. There is no official controller tier list.
What changed for controllers in Season 5
New in Rage of the Frostborn, launched 1 October 2026 with Patch 1.5 — applies only to what you are playing now.
- Virtual cursor removed. Patch 1.5 improved the Item Faction interfaces for controllers and removed the virtual cursor; all interfaces should now be natively interactable with buttons or thumbsticks. It lands on the Bazaar and faction screens.
- Text inputs. The Patch 1.5 notes fixed navigating affix and subtype picker roll text inputs on controller, previously limited to the slider.
- Menu collisions. 1.5 fixed opening the main or controller options menu during virtual-keyboard use producing broken gamepad input.
If a problem started with the season and none of the above help, check the Season 5 known bugs and hotfixes. This page reflects the build current as of Patch 1.5.1.1 on 2026-10-03.
Controller and the PS5 version are different questions
The Steam release is Windows-only; Steam's app data lists macOS and Linux as unsupported. A PS5 console version has been referenced by the developer alongside the Orobyss expansion but has not shipped, and no official Xbox release has been announced.
So "Last Epoch on PS5 controller" really means a DualSense on a PC running the Windows build. Nothing about a console build, its settings menu or patch cadence can be confirmed.
FAQ
Is Last Epoch controller support partial or full?
Full. Steam's app data records controller support as full, and DualShock and DualSense are both named in the store categories.
Why does my PlayStation controller show Xbox buttons? Steam Input presents every pad as an XInput controller, so Xbox glyphs on a DualSense are expected. Only turn Steam Input off for that family if the pad then refuses input entirely.
Can I remap every button? Not reliably. The March 2024 PlayStation workaround could not get button mapping working, and players have separately reported being unable to rebind the A and Y inputs.
Does any of this differ on legacy or offline characters? No — nothing in the controller implementation is tied to online play.
