Last Epoch FPS Drops and Stuttering: What Actually Helps

Season 5 did not add frame drops; it made an old complaint impossible to ignore. The fix is not a booster subscription — it is four free driver and Windows changes, in a specific order, plus one stutter class the developers already patched.

  • No DLSS yet. As of Hotfix 1.5.1.1 (2026-10-03), none of the 1.5, 1.5.1 or 1.5.1.1 patch notes contain a DLSS, FSR or XeSS entry.
  • Cheapest first: Smooth Motion off, shader cache at 100 GB, Steam Game Recording off. Minutes, fully reversible.
  • Then two Windows knobs: a 16 GB paging file with matching initial and maximum size, and unchecking CPU core 0 on LastEpoch.exe.
  • One stutter is genuinely fixed. Entering Caves, Tombs and Cemeteries froze the client until Hotfix 1.5.1.1 shipped.

What Season 5 changed, and what it did not

The loudest performance thread on the official forum — "Will we get dlss? S5 FPS drop?" — has 30 posts, 2044 views, and its most recent reply is dated 2026-10-03. The opening post kills the "just buy a better GPU" theory:

Upgraded to 5090… lowered all possible settings… did everything I could find from the internet. I now have fps dropping to 10 from act 1, not on high hit build, not with dense mob.

The same player starts at 120+ in town at 4K, drops to about 60 in the Monolith, and falls further over a long session. This is not GPU-limited.

Season 5 did ship two official performance changes. The 1.5 notes list "Optimized the performance of how assets are loaded into scenes" and "Introduced a system for reducing VFX complexity when multiple instances of abilities are spawned, which improves performance in heated battles." Neither addresses the reported regression.

On DLSS, be precise. The reply usually quoted as developer confirmation — "Yes. They're working on it." — was posted by a regular user, whose next message explains where he heard it: from a developer stream, with "no details on when that might be." An unconfirmed plan, repeated secondhand, no date, no notes entry. Season 5's content is covered in our Season 5 overview.

One community data point on drivers

The final reply in that thread, dated 2026-10-03, comes from a player who hit a real PC lockup in a mini dungeon and fixed it by rolling back to Studio drivers. If your frame drops started after a driver update, test that branch first.

The free fixes, ordered by what they cost you

Step Cost Expected gain Where it comes from
Smooth Motion off, shader cache 100 GB, Steam Game Recording off One panel, reversible Kills driver-side frame time noise; bigger cache, fewer recompile hitches; recording encodes frames you pay for Forum guide 78959
Paging file 16 GB, initial = maximum Five minutes, reboot Stops Windows resizing swap mid-session, which reads as micro-stutter r/LastEpoch
Uncheck CPU core 0 on LastEpoch.exe Two clicks per launch Keeps the busiest Windows core off the game's render thread Same thread, plus forum topic 74459
In-game settings pass Ten minutes, permanent The largest honest frame gain available Forum guide 78959

Every row is community measurement, not an Eleventh Hour Games promise, and none of it is in the patch notes.

Smooth Motion and the shader cache

The most-cited community fix comes from a 2025-08-23 forum guide, written by a player on a GTX 1650 Ti and an i5-10300H: "Nvidia settings: turn off smooth motion, make sure shader cache is set to 100gb." Smooth Motion is the driver's frame interpolation; on a game with uneven frame pacing, generated frames on top make stutter worse, not smoother.

The same author turns off Steam Game Recording — "it eats fps if its on" — and suggests the launch options -high -USEALLAVAILABLECORES, a flag another r/LastEpoch player independently credits. A separate voice in the DLSS thread also sets anti-aliasing to off in the GPU control panel so it cannot override the in-game setting.

Cap your frame rate in the driver, not just in game

A third Reddit thread on 2-3 FPS stutters reports that "capping the fps in NVidia panel gives an overall smoother performance." A cap turns a long unstable tail into a flat line. Start at 60 or 70 above your monitor refresh rate, not at your maximum.

Paging file: 16 GB, initial and maximum

The Reddit thread gives the instruction as one line: "Change your paging file size to 16gb, both initial and max. Don't forget to type it in mb, so 16x1024."

The path is Windows Settings, System, Advanced system settings, Performance Settings, Advanced tab, Virtual memory, Change. Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size", pick the drive, choose Custom size, and type the same number in both fields: 16,384 MB. Reboot.

This is a hedge, not a cure: a system-managed page file resizes during play, and every resize is I/O the game waits on. Sixteen gigabytes is one player's number, not a measured optimum; the useful part is initial equals maximum.

CPU core 0 and process affinity

Unchecking CPU core 0 on LastEpoch.exe comes from the same Reddit thread and is expanded in official forum topic 74459: "Set Process Affinity for Last Epoch and uncheck CPU 0." The reasoning there is that core 0 is the one Windows and background apps lean on hardest, so keeping the game off it avoids contention.

Caveats from that thread: affinity resets every launch, so use Process Lasso to make it permanent; on Intel hybrid CPUs select the P-cores; on dual-GPU laptops confirm LastEpoch.exe is on the discrete card. And the counterweight — a player in a March 2024 Steam thread found "unchecking made things worse" and put core 0 back. Measure, then keep or revert.

The one stutter the developers actually fixed

Hotfix 1.5.1.1, published 2026-10-03 at 04:41 UTC, carries exactly one performance line:

Official source: Last Epoch Hotfix 1.5.1.1 Notes — "Fixed issue where players would experience brief freezes when loading into Caves, Tombs, and Cemeteries."

Before that build, entering those areas could hang the client badly enough that players filed separate "System Hang" reports. The same hotfix fixed black textures there and requires an updated client. On 1.5 or 1.5.1 that freeze class is still live, and the fix is a launcher update, not a setting.

The stutter that is not fixed: loot and shard piles

A Steam discussion from March 2024 describes the other pattern, and it matches what S5 players report:

Sometimes when a lot of loot drops, many mobs die at the same time, or I loot a lot of Runes at the same time… the game literally kinda 'sutter-freezes' for 0,5secs, drops down by like BIG AMOUNTS of FPS - and then continues fluently. The frequence this is happening gets worse and worse the longer I play.

Another commenter there tried driver caps at 60, 90 and 120, RTSS, G-Sync, low latency modes, different XMP profiles and a downclocked GPU, with the same result every time. No official entry in 1.5, 1.5.1 or 1.5.1.1 addresses it.

Practical response: restart the client when a session degrades, and pick your farming spots deliberately. The Rage of Morditas encounter is the worst case by design — 200 kills in phase one, every enemy resurrected in phase two, then a five-slot reward panel — inside the Echo content covered in our Monolith of Fate guide. A tighter loot filter shrinks the pile on the ground, not the drop event that triggers the hitch.

Ignore the pages selling you a network booster

The results filling this search are mostly network optimizers and generic "FPS fix" farms. They cannot work here: these drops happen inside your own process, on your GPU, while a booster reroutes packets. It can smooth desync, never a frame's render cost.

Check the quality bar yourself. One widely-linked "Best Last Epoch Settings 2026" page says the game went from Early Access to full release on February 21, 2025, and lists requirements as Windows 7 or newer, an Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 660. The official Steam store page says 1.0 released on 2024-02-21 and lists Windows 10 64-bit, an i5 2500 or FX-4350, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM, DirectX 11 and 22 GB of storage. Both pages sell a subscription.

Do not apply "FPS pack" registry or file changes

The popular video guides tell you to rename GameBarPresenceWriter files, delete driver caches with permission changes, and run registry reversers for services, transparency and priority separation. That alters Windows outside the game's control for no measurable gain in its frame time. Change game and driver settings; leave the OS alone.

FAQ

Does Last Epoch have DLSS yet? Not as of Hotfix 1.5.1.1 on 2026-10-03. No DLSS, FSR or XeSS entry appears in the 1.5, 1.5.1 or 1.5.1.1 notes. The "they're working on it" quote that circulates is a player relaying a developer stream, not a dated commitment.

Will a faster GPU fix the frame drops? No, per the strongest report: an RTX 5090 with everything turned down still fell to 10 FPS from Act 1.

Is the paging file really the problem? Only a test tells. If stutter appears after long sessions, a fixed 16 GB page file is a cheap five-minute experiment. If it hits in the first ten minutes, look at settings and drivers instead.

Should I set CPU affinity every time I launch? Task Manager resets it each launch. If excluding core 0 helps you, automate it with Process Lasso. If it does not — and one 2024 player reported the opposite — skip it.

Is a game booster worth buying for this? No. These are local rendering and loading hitches, not latency.
