Last Epoch How to Get More Corruption (and Reach 400)

Corruption rises through exactly one action: killing the Shade of Orobyss. Everything else — how far out you push your Echo Web, how many times you killed your timeline boss, what your other Timelines sit at — only changes how big that one jump is. To open the Season 5 pinnacle you need 400 Corruption placed in your Echo Web, and past that you waste time, because the encounter "does not scale difficulty with Corruption."

Written against Season 5 Rage of the Frostborn (Patch 1.5) with 1.5.1 and 1.5.1.1 applied, as of 2026-10-03. One honesty note first: the official Season 5 notes state the 400 requirement and the no-scaling rule, and almost nothing about how to raise Corruption. The routing below comes from EHG forum threads and third-party Monolith guides that predate Season 5. Where those contradict each other, this page says so.

What Corruption Actually Changes

Corruption is a per-Timeline difficulty dial that pays you back in loot. Raising it increases the health and damage of every enemy in that Timeline — bosses and Shade included — and raises XP gain, item rarity, and the odds on Echo objective rewards and boss Uniques. Third-party guides call the scaling linear, and list Empowered Shade Uniques gated at 50, 120 and 200 Corruption. Treat those thresholds as a third-party reading, not patch-note fact.

The Season 5 notes give one hard number: Idol altars drop with far fewer affixes below 150 Corruption, and none at all below level 50. That is a real reason to push past 400 when farming idols rather than chasing a pinnacle.

The Three Inputs to a Shade Kill

A Shade kill is the only lever. How much Corruption it hands you depends on three inputs, on which community sources agree:

Input Effect
Distance from the center of the Timeline Outermost Shades give the most Corruption, closest ones the least
Timeline boss kills since your last Shade Each grants a Gaze of Orobyss stack, which multiplies the next Shade kill's gain
Corruption in your other Timelines A Shade pays a bonus for how high your best other Timeline is, so weak Timelines climb fast

Two mechanics help. Killing a Shade resets the entire Echo Web and generates a fresh one, so you never re-run the same layout. And a Timeline far below your best can spawn a Shade Echo after a single Echo, handing it a large chunk of your highest total almost immediately.

The fast push: extend the Web outward, take the outer Shade, eat the reset, repeat. What you cannot skip is Gaze of Orobyss, because it comes from killing the timeline boss — which is gated behind Stability.

The Stability Trade

Every Echo you complete grants Stability to that Timeline, scaled by how far from the center you ran it and by how many bonus enemies you killed. Stability unlocks the quest Echoes, and the timeline boss is the third quest. That is the trade: Gaze comes from the boss, the boss needs Stability, and every Shade kill that converts Gaze into Corruption wipes the Web you were banking Stability in. Speed means re-running Echoes from a clean Web with just enough kills to reach the boss.

One Weaver node can silently block the whole loop

An April 2025 official forum thread and a December 2025 Steam thread both point at the same trap: a Weaver Tree node in the lower left corner stops the Shade from raising your Corruption, so players re-run a timeline that can never go up. That Steam thread also reports Glyph of Envy no longer supplies Stability the way players remember — Temporal Keystones are now the source. Both are community reporting, but this is the most common explanation for a stalled push. Check the tree before blaming the system: the Weaver Tree guide covers where it sits.

Target Corruption to Route to Blocker

Target Recommended route Expected blocker
0 to 50 Normal Timeline, any Shade kill None. Third-party guides put the cap here
50 to 150 Push the Web outward, farm the boss for Gaze Gaze too low, so Shades give single digits
150 to 250 Boss kill first, then the farthest Shade reachable Boss wall on Stability; the outer Web costs more to rebuild
250 to 400 Empowered Timeline, using the cross-Timeline bonus Empowered must be unlocked first — see the Monolith of Fate guide
400 to 1000 Not required unless you are farming a corruption-gated Unique Wasted effort — the pinnacle does not care

On an alt sharing your stash, community consensus says a Confluence of Oblivion Woven Echo lifts that alt's Timeline straight to your highest Corruption. An extremely rare drop a Weaver node improves — a shortcut, not a plan.

Undoing a Mistake: Sanctuary of Eterra

Corruption is reversible. The Sanctuary of Eterra Echo sits next to your Web's starting point, and completing it offers three options for how much Corruption to remove — a tool, not a punishment. Overshoot chasing an outer Shade, then walk it back.

The official record corroborates it. Patch 1.5 fixed a bug where "cleansing Corruption more than once at a single Sanctuary of Eterra would only apply the first cleanse to enemy health and damage and to increased item rarity" — so a cleanse demonstrably cuts enemy health, enemy damage and item rarity, and repeated cleanses now all land. The same notes warn that with the Memories of the Observer Weaver node, resetting an Echo Web there stops the starting Echo Chains from spawning with Woven Echoes.

Why 1000 Corruption Will Not Place the Echo

This is the most expensive misconception in the system, and it splits into two questions.

"I have 1000 Corruption, why is it not placeable?" Because 400 is a threshold, not a target. Three checks:

  1. Do you have the Echo at all? Demigod's Ascendance is a Woven Echo received after defeating standard Morditas. No Corruption number substitutes for the drop.
  2. Are you in an Empowered Timeline? Third-party guides put the Normal cap at 50 Corruption, making 400 impossible there.
  3. Is the Corruption on the Timeline whose Web you are placing into? The cross-Timeline bonus is what a fresh Shade reads, not a bank you spend from.

"Is the fight harder at 400 than at 1000?" No. Demigod's Ascendance "requires 400 Corruption to place in your Echo Web, and it does not scale difficulty with Corruption." There is no over-invested version of this boss. What scales the Morditas Echo chain is the separate seasonal Anger gauge — see the Morditas and Pinnacle Morditas boss guide.

Where the Sources Disagree

Two claims circulate with real disagreement behind them. Neither is in official patch notes, so test them yourself rather than quote them.

  • What a fresh Timeline inherits. The April 2025 forum answer says a new or reset Timeline gets a Shade after its first Echo worth roughly 90% of your highest Corruption; the December 2025 Steam answer says 95%. Same mechanic, different number, different dates.
  • What dying to the Shade costs. Maxroll's Shade guide says all Gaze stacks are lost on death; a community blog claims a Patch 1.1 change cut it to exactly one stack. Unresolved, and it decides whether a low-Stability run is worth the risk.
Read the timestamps, not just the advice

The April 2025 thread predates five patches and the December 2025 thread predates Season 5. Check which build each guide was written against before reorganizing a plan. The Season 5 overview covers what changed in 1.5.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to raise Corruption? Kill the Shade of Orobyss as far out on the Web as you can reach, banking Gaze of Orobyss from the timeline boss first — it multiplies each Shade kill.

Does pushing the Echo Web out change anything? Yes, twice: outer Shades give more Corruption, and outer Echoes give more Stability for the boss.

Is 1000 Corruption better than 400 for Pinnacle Morditas? No. 400 is the requirement and the encounter does not scale with Corruption, so anything past it is waste.

Why does my Corruption number not move? Check in order: the Weaver node that stops Shade gains, low Gaze stacks, then a Normal Timeline cap of 50.
